Enjoy a “Heartbeat” nostalgia experience in Pear Tree Cottage and re-live the feeling of the 1960s.
We live in the adjoining Pear Tree Farm house and are only the second family to have occupied this property in the last century. The farm house and cottage pre-date all local records and are evident on the oldest map of the area from 1850 when Shildon was just a cluster of small settlements.
The Cottage was believed to have been built as farm labourers accommodation and initially consisted of just two rooms one upstairs and one down. As the town of Shildon grew so did the cottage with a kitchen extension on the ground floor and an outside toilet but by the new Millennium it was falling well below the standards of the day.
Includes all the necessities for the modern family.
In 2013 we started a major renovation and took the Cottage right back to it’s humble beginnings of the original construction then added an extension which effectively doubled it’s size creating a much larger kitchen diner, an extra bedroom, full bathroom upstairs and toilet on the ground floor. Although all the work has been done to the latest building regulations and contains all the necessities for modern life we have retained lots of character and original features and have furnished the cottage in the style of the 1960s.
We have had lots of fun travelling from the Scottish borders in the North down to Yorkshire in the South and from East to West coast collecting furniture and ornaments to create just the right atmosphere of the period that Gill and I grew up in. Everything you see in the pictures is functional from the 1960s Belling electric oven to the latest flat screen LED TV built into the 1960s style cabinet. In fact all of the carpentry was done by a good friend of ours who served his apprenticeship in the 1960s.
